 "NIce looking, OK performance" 2009-10-15
By Dr. Eric J. Karson (Bala Cynwyd, PA USA)
Frankly, I expected more from Haier. This is basically a dorm-fridge, with a glass door, and digital temperature display. It looks very nice, an my wife is thrilled -- which is what matters most. It sits on ceramic tile in my TV room, and the noise, while present, is not bothersome. I am a bit less happy with the constant 5-6 degree temperature variation. Needs better insulation, I shudder to think how much electricity its eats!

"Works well and is relatively quiet but UPS delivery is a pain" 2009-07-30
By Windy (San Francisco)
After doing research on all the wine cellars, we decided on this Haier 24-bottle wine cellar. It is relatively quiet and does not have a lot of vibration. The product is shipped via UPS. UPS did not ship the wine cellar on the day it was suppose to. On the 3rd day past the delivery date, I had to call up UPS to figure out what happened to the package. When it finally arrived, the packaging was very flimsy and there was a ding on the side panel.

 "Beware -" 2009-07-18
By J. Carter (Laguna, CA)
This product seemed to be an excellent buy. But unless you can actually pick it up in person, there is a much higher than average chance that your product will arrive at your door damaged. As previous reviews have mentioned, the packaging is inadequate for a product that requires a little care in shipping. I am shocked by the lack of packaging used. Do you really need the pain of returning it?

"Looks great and works great....until the warranty expires" 2009-07-18
By Gizmo Guy
Looks great, and when it works it works well. But I had two units fail on me within a year.

The unit I originally bought was DOA, but after an inspection by a service technician revealed that the coolant had completely leaked out, Haier replaced it. The replacement unit was a refurbished unit which seemed to have some damage on the bottom. But it worked fine, until it failed almost exactly one year later, too late to be covered under the warranty!

I liked the looks of the unit, and the digital readout is a real boon--if nothing else, it helps to tell you when the unit stops working. :-)

But I don't think the headache, and the hours I spent on the phone, are worth it. I'll look for another brand next time.

"I have never rated anything this low!" 2009-07-17
By Gary (Chicago)
I agree with other reviewers who were disappointed....extremely poor hinge design....in fact, mine arrived with the door off the hinges. There was no visable damage to the packaging....which was in was minimal. The "leveling" wheels were bent and not effective and a piece was missing from the left lower corner. I would have paid 4X the price for a well designed appliance with appropriate packaging. Too bad, I will never know whether the cooling device worked well or not....this is going to the curb side tomorrow to be haulded to the junk heep!

"They refuse to provide service for their product" 2009-09-14
By david delaney
My 18 bottle wine cooler failed after 17 months. It would not cool. I called wine enthusiast and they thought the problem could be fixed by installing a new circuit board. They sent me a new circuit board (at no cost) which I installed. This did not fix the problem. I called them again and they told me they could not help me. I called/emailed them several times to try to get service for this product. Wine Enthusiast has never responded to these requests for service or information. So I am now stuck with a Wine Enthusiast wine cooler that does not cool.

"Do Not Buy This Piece of Junk!" 2009-07-08
By shortstuff 415 (San Francisco, CA United States)
I've had my wine cooler for a year and a half; however, after 1 year it began to slowly die. Of course when I called the service center it was 1 month after the warranty expired and I had to pay $25 per fan, two of which have already needed to be replaced and the unit still isn't working. The service center consists of 1 guy who isn't very accommodating, understanding or very knowledgeable out side of the "well, these things aren't made to last, you have to replace parts" attitude. As of now I can't store reds in the unit at all because the average temperature level is around 68-72! The white section won't spoil my wine yet, but its not the 43-45 that it should be. At this point I'm just waiting for the unit to die completely so I can call the junk man to come haul it away!

Something this expensive should last A LOT longer than 1 1/2 years!

"Great product for the money." 2009-06-16
By J. Pennington (St. Augustine)
A couple of things I want to get out of the way first thing. This appliance cost me $189.00 with shipping. It is not an expensive appliance so if you are expecting 100% humidity, the ability to stay cold in your garage, or completely silent operation you may be disappointed.

On the other hand, if you keep your house or apartment fairly cool then you will have the ability to keep your wines at whatever temperature you most enjoy them along with fairly quiet operation.

-Cooling Ability

In regards to the unit's cooling ability I was initially concerned that any thermoelectric cooler wouldn't be able to stay cool in my apartment. From about 9:00PM to Noon the next day my apartment stays a relatively comfortable 76-77 degrees. However, starting at around 1:00PM the sun begins to hit the west side of my apartment and by late afternoon my AC cannot keep it cooler than 81 degrees. On occasion the temperature inside my apartment will hit 83 degrees in the afternoon even with the AC on. The good news is that this cooler can hold its own in these conditions. Because it has plenty of time during the night and morning to get down to its 50 degree setting it only drifts up slightly during the few hours of heat inside my apartment. In fact, I have not seen it get above 52 and usually it stays at 51. If you keep your place below 77 degrees you will not have difficulty getting the upper part of the cooler into the 40s from my experience (the lowest setting is 45). The bottom section stays at a rock solid 55 degrees in my apartment.

-Noise

It sounds like some people are buying this with the expectation of silent operation. I read the reviews so I knew it was going to be noisy, but from the reviews I read you would think it sounds like an aircraft trying to take off. It does make noise, but I have it on the other side of the wall from my living room and it is very difficult to hear. As long as it is one room removed from where you like to read, surf the web or whatever it should be fine. The TV easily drowns it out even in the same room.

-Other Thoughts

It looks nice, has a blue digital read-out on the front and a nice interior light. Overall, I am pleased with how it looks next to my bar. Mine arrived well packaged and with no damage which was a concern for me as I had read a lot of reviews reporting damage during shipping. In a year I will follow up to let you know how reliable it is. A couple of my taller wine bottles don't fit and champagne is a tight squeeze.

-Conclusion

I love it thus far. As long as it continues to perform the way it has it will be $189.00 well spent.

"Fun toy with a couple drawbacks" 2009-05-05
By Samir (Virginia Beach, VA)
Initially had this cooler "built in" in a counter vacancy which left about 2" of space on each side and above, but it didn't cool at all. It's not a front-venting unit and needs a lot of space around it. Now that I pulled it out and have it free standing, it cools excessively. I've set the "red" lower compartment is set to 65 degrees (the highest allowable temp), but is always at 48. I set the upper "white" compartment to 55, again the highest setting, and usually is 55. So the White area is actually warmer than the red, but it is a constant temp.

Also, many white or champagne bottles with the larger diameter don't fit, which is unfortunate if you want to chill champagne or white wine.

It's been quiet and convenient, though. It's much nicer than having a case of wine floating around in your fridge! And it impresses your friends and looks nice with the light.

 "Not a reliable product" 2009-04-23

I have tried 2 of these in the past 3 months. The first one started to heat my wine after 2 months use. The second one started to heat the wine after 33 days. It is very noisy and it has a lousy warranty. I don't recommend this product.

The only complaint I have is that this unit is a little louder than I would like. Otherwise, it looks great, was very very easy to assemble, holds lots of wine and doesn't take up much space. Very modern and aesthetically pleasing. Glad I bought it.

"This WIne Cooler Performs Like It's Supposed To" 2009-09-16
By RolexSubmariner (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I was just given this NewAir wine cooler as a wedding gift from a friend. I must say that I'm extremely satisfied with it thus far. I was rather concerned when I first got it being that I instantly went online and checked out tons of reviews of the product. Although I've read a few reviews of how it doesn't cool that well, I've experienced just the opposite.

I followed the manufacturer's instructions and let it sit for a few hours before plugging it in. After it was plugged in, I actually let it run for about 2 days before I put any wine in it. I also wanted to get a thermometer and check to see if the temperature setting was accurate. The display read 60 while my thermometer said 61 (a 1 degree difference is pretty close). Overall, it's also a good looking unit. We're very satisfied with this wine refrigerator!

 "Cheap junk" 2009-09-12
By scf (California)
This is the worst refrigerator I've ever owned. As another reviewer mentioned, the fan runs constantly, even when the set temperature is reached. And it won't go below 54F under any conditions, so it's really limited in what it can store. The holes in the door frame don't line up with the holes in the door glass, so the door pull can't be installed. The interior is plastic, and the shelves only pull out about half-way before they start to fall out of the slots in the walls--no bearings, no draws, just a slot.

And it's loud! I think I'd prefer a standard compressor-based unit (vibration problems aside); I've had cheap student dorm-room refrigerators that were quieter.

The kicker is that the cost to return it via UPS is almost as much as the refund would be, so it's probably not worth it.

Lesson learned--don't buy single-sourced products that can't be tested first.

"Cheap - In Every Sense of the Word" 2009-07-08
By Herman Jacobs (Houston, TX)
I've owned this fridge for three months now, and for the price, it has performed reasonably well--so far. When you add together the price and the shipping rates, you probably won't be able to find a cheaper thermoelectric wine fridge with this storage capacity. (I consider the non-vibrating feature of thermoelectric fridges an important requirement for cellaring wine long term.) However, there are some definite deficiencies and one really big question mark about long-term performance.

As my wine collection has grown, I've purchased several wine fridges from different manufacturers. Of the four wine fridges I now own, this one has the cheapest look and feel. Yes, it looks quite attractive from a distance, but when you get up close, you notice that every element of its construction seems just a little (and sometimes a lot) flimsier than my other fridges. For example, the material used for the inside walls of this fridge looks and feels like extremely thin plastic that could easily crack or be punctured. (The plastic liner seems comparable in weight and thickness to the thin plastic that is often used for packagaing small electronics accessories like headphones or video cables.) This plastic inside wall liner will probably hold up just fine if treated gently, but it seems like a clue to overall quality.

Similarly, the chrome trays that hold the bottles are just a little thinner, lighter, and flimsier than those in my other wine fridges. Speaking of the trays, with a tray loaded with bottles, you are supposed to be able to pull it out a few inches to get easier access to the bottles and a better view of the label. But the trays on this fridge do not slide smoothly once they are loaded with wine. Instead, they snag and get hung up. In fact, I worry that the force required to unstick and pull out a tray with bottles on it either might cause the bottles to come flying out on onto the floor or might tear the thin plastic that lines the inside walls of the fridge. So to get a tray out safely, you have to remove the bottles first, which defeats the purpose of having trays that are supposed to slide partway out for easier viewing and access.

With gentle and careful use, you can probably avoid problems with the flimsy physical construction of this fridge; however, the thing that worries me most about this fridge is the long-term endurance of the thermoelectric cooling device. This fridge sits side-by-side with another fridge I own that was made by another manufacturer and has exactly the same storage capacity. Compared to the other manufacturer's fridge, the AW fridge's cooling device kicks on and runs more often and longer--probably more than twice as long--to maintain the same temperature. With the temp set at 55 degrees, this fridge's cooling system runs almost non-stop, never shutting off for more than just a few minutes before kicking back on for another long stretch, and that's what makes me worry about long term durability. Because of my concern about the cooling device running constantly, I've raised the temp setting from 55 to 58 degrees, and that seems to help somewhat, but this thermoelectric fridge's cooling device still runs much more often and much longer with the setting at 58 degrees than my other same-size thermoelectric fridge does at 55. It only makes sense that the more often the cooling device kicks on, and the longer it runs, the shorter will be its working lifespan.

One last word to the wise: For those who are just starting to appreciate the pleasures and advantages of cellaring your own wine, maybe it makes sense to buy a small cheap "starter" unit until you can decide whether your wine bug is a temporary infection, a manageable illness, or a lifelong obsession. But before doing as I did--buying a second, and then a third, and then a fourth fairly small fridge--consider taking the money you'd spend on a bunch of small fridges and instead putting those dollars into the cost of one higher quality, higher capacity unit that will solve your wine-storage needs over the long haul. Better yet, find 25 or 30 cubic feet of space under the stairs or in a closet of your house, wall it off, put in racks, insulate it, and buy a cooling unit to refrigerate it, to make your own mini-cellar where you can easily store several hundred bottles.

The Bottom Line: This fridge seems like a fair deal for the price, but if I had it to do over, I think I'd be better off in the long haul spending just a little more for a probably more durable fridge of the same size (which you can find on sale for not that much more), or putting the money into a much larger fridge or cellaring system that would better satisfy both present and future wine storage needs.

"Great wine fridge. Quiet. Great Price. We love it!!!" 2008-01-25
By Lagniappe (New York)
I ordered this as a present, and read a lot of reviews. There are so many negative product reviews for wine fridges, I really didn't know what to buy. So, let me put your fears to rest:

1) This fridge is really quiet. In an empty room with no AC on, you can't hear it.

2) It's beautiful. Really nice stainless finish, we get lots of compliments on it. On par with Cuisinart models we've seen at Macy's, but bigger.

3) No assembly except putting on the handle. Hallelujah!!!

4) Consistent temperature - the temp holds steady and does not reset when exposed to sunlight, or when the room is warm. It's really easy to read the temp setting, really easy to set, and it works like a dream. You can feel the difference in temperature between the 2 zones.

Dollar for dollar, this was competitively priced. I really liked my interaction with Compact Appliance. They were great. And, we're SO happy with it.

Hope you will be too.
